Interesting, interesting. I think a truly great song is quite malleable. The words and melody just seem to fit. You can take it high and you can swing it low, and it's still a great song. OTH, I think certain songs demonstrate a need to go a certain way. The basic idea of this song is running, so I hear it better as an upbeat, bouncy sort of gettyup. When I sing along with 'Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night,The first one's named Sweet Anne Marie, and she's my hearts delight', I feel exultant and happy. I saw them until 89 and was also periodically impressed with some solos. But, this is the advantage of 20-20 hindsight and obsessiveness. Don't get me started on NFA.
